Erica Hartmann

Erica Hartmann has been teaching in the Farmingdale Public Schools since 1999. She earned her Bachelors Degree in Music Education from The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and her Masters Degree in Music Education from The Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College.
Prior to coming to Farmingdale she taught elementary general music in Locust Valley. During her tenure at Woodward Parkway she has taught general music, Recorder Ensemble and 4th and 5th grade instrumental lessons. Currently she conducts the Junior and Senior Bands as well as the 5th grade Jazz Band. Erica also conducted the Farmingdale All-District 5th grade band for two years. She has presented a recruiting seminar for NYSCAME. She is a member of NMEA, NYSSMA, NAfME, and Sigma Alpha Iota.
Erica resides in Farmingville with her husband and twin 8-year-old girls. She would like to thank the Farmingdale Public Schools for allowing the students to perform at the 2012 NYSBDA Symposium, Robin DeSantis for her invitation to present and Ron Sutherland for his recommendation.

 

Woodward Parkway 5th Grade Senior Band

The Woodward Parkway 5th Grade Senior Band is comprised of 51 students. The band represents about half of the 5th grade. Woodward Parkway is one of four elementary schools in the Farmingdale School District. The band rehearses twice a week for forty minutes before school. Approximately 35 of the students also perform with the Jazz Band which rehearses an additional morning each week. The Woodward Parkway Senior Band has had the privilege of working with Ron Sutherland as a guest conductor. The Senior Band performs in the Winter Concert in December, Spring Concert in May and also has participated in NYSSMA Majors for the past four years. Their honors include two Gold ratings and two Gold with Distinction ratings. Many of the students also participate in NYSSMA Solos.

Clinic: Recruiting for Retention

The instrument trial process in third grade is crucial to students’ success on their instrument. During the performance clinic, Erica Hartmann will present the Woodward Parkway Elementary School’s recruiting process and show how she and Therese Mannino integrate the Senior Band and Senior Orchestra respectively, into the process.
